The Overland Expo Foundation is proud to announce the awarding of a $9,330 grant to the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association (MDHCA) for their Overlander Basecamp at Goffs. Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Center (MDHCA) is committed to providing educational, adventurous, and safe access to the adjoining Mojave Desert Preserve.
ABOUT Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association
The mission of MDHCA is to research, conserve, and educate the public about the natural & cultural history of the Mojave Desert regions through operation of a regional research center, including library & archives, restoration of historic structures, conservation of historic open space, interpretation of backcountry trails, publication of educational & historical guide books in concert with government agencies & people of good faith everywhere.
Founded by Dennis Casebier — an adventurer, historian, and dedicated steward of the desert. He was best known for re-establishing the 140-mile Mojave Road off-road trail, Casebier introduced countless explorers to the region’s rugged beauty through his Mojave Road Guide and the creation of the Eastern Mojave Heritage Trail. A respected authority on desert history, he also curated the museum and archive in Goffs, California, where his legacy continues to guide the MDHCA’s mission today.
The Impact
The grant will be utilized to develop an additional section of the MDHCA as an Overlander Base Camp for 25-30 campsites which will provide a home base for exploration of the East Mojave Desert (including the Mojave Road), surrounding BLM land and the East Mojave heritage trails. The base camp will provide the overland community with a beautiful, isolated setting with conveniences (restrooms, showers, common area, individual campsites), to develop comradery, to utilize experts in educational and guided opportunities, and to promote the ease of access and convenience to the East Mojave Desert for endless adventure.
