In 2020, the Beachie Creek Fire nearly erased the town of Detroit Lake, Oregon—leaving only four structures standing and devastating nearby trail systems, campgrounds, and recreation areas. Five years later, hope and hard work are bringing the area back to life.
With the support of a $6,000 Overland Expo Foundation Grant, Tread Lightly! continues to work on the Detroit Lake Revival Project to restore key recreation sites and reestablish access for both motorized and non-motorized users. Ahead of Overland Expo PNW, volunteers came together to clean, repair, and revitalize heavily used day areas and campgrounds, ensuring that outdoor enthusiasts could once again enjoy this beloved corner of Oregon’s backcountry.
Restoration Through Community Action
The project focused on stewardship and long-term education. Volunteers cleaned and restored two major day-use areas and one campground—mowing grass, trimming brush, sanding and staining benches, clearing trails, and removing debris.
In addition to the hands-on cleanup, the team successfully installed a new kiosk and Carsonite trail signage promoting responsible recreation. The kiosk, located at one of Detroit Lake’s popular staging areas, highlights the partnership between Tread Lightly! and the Overland Expo Foundation and serves as an enduring reminder to visitors to tread lightly, stay on designated routes, and respect the land.
A Model for Responsible Recreation
The Detroit Lake Revival Project brought together an inspiring group of volunteers from Team Overland, Two Wolf Foundation, and Dometic/Frontrunner, along with individuals who came simply to give back. Their efforts demonstrate what the overland community can achieve when adventure and stewardship intersect.
Each action—whether sanding a picnic bench or clearing a trail—helps rebuild not only infrastructure but trust between land managers and recreators. The project also serves as a catalyst for economic recovery, as renewed access draws visitors back to the region.
To have such an immediate impact was heartwarming. The local community thanked us everywhere we went—at the market, in the campgrounds, even at the food trucks. It reminded us that our work mattered.
